2017 JYO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS


ALL INSTRUMENTS:
Sight reading; play a solo of your choice showing your abilities and range.  Please bring a copy of your solo for the judges.

IN ADDITION:
Winds and Brass:
Major scales of one or two octaves (two octaves preferred) from the following: C, Bb, F, Eb, G, D, A, and a chromatic scale.

Violin:
Please prepare ALL scales with a minimum of 2 notes per bow slurred: G, A, Bb Major (2 octaves required; 3 octaves preferable); and d melodic minor, F Major (2 octaves required)

Viola:
Major scales, 2 octaves: C, D, Eb, G.

Cello:
Scales, 3 octaves: Eb and D Major; 2 octaves: Bb Major and d melodic minor.

Bass:
Major scales, 2 octaves: E, F, G.

Percussion:
All percussion audition candidates must pick a solo of your choice on EITHER a mallet keyboard instrument, snare drum or timpani, showing your best abilities. Sight reading will also be given on that particular instrument.

In addition, each person is REQUIRED to perform on all of the following:

Snare Drum:
Rudimental Roll, Orchestral Roll, Flams, Paradiddles.

Mallet Instruments:  2 Octave Major Scales & Arpeggios: C, F, Bb, Eb, G, & D. Plus, Chromatic Scale, 2 Octaves.

Timpani:
Long Roll, ppp to fff. Interval tuning to 4ths, 5ths and 3rds.

Harp:
All major scales and arpeggios.

2017 CSYO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

IMPORTANT ITEM OF NOTE:
The CSYO season begins with a five-day residential summer camp. This camp will be held August 2-6, 2017 at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC.  Attendance at the camp is required of all accepted CSYO musicians.

 

WOODWINDS:          
  • All major scales and arpeggios, minimum of two octaves
  • Required solo no substitutions accepted
  • Required orchestral excerpts
  • Sight reading
 
If you play and have access to a piccolo, English horn, or bass clarinet and would like to be considered for these positions you must prepare a short selection of your choice for your audition.  Required orchestral excerpts links can be found below.

Flute
Three octave chromatic scale from low C 
Required solo:  : Joh. Joaquim Quantz Concerto in G Major for flute and piano mvmt. I: mm. 24-54 (letter A-B) and mm. 65-87 (letter C-D); mvmt. II: mm. 8-31.
Flute orchestral excerpts:  solo 1st flute excerpts from C. Debussy's Prelude to "The Afternoon of a Faun"
 
Oboe
Chromatic scale from low C to high E-flat (three ledger lines above staff)
Required solo:  Benedetto Marcello Concerto in C Minor for Oboe and Piano mvmt. II: beginning to m. 21; mvmt III: beginning to m. 28 and mm. 63-107 inclusive.
Oboe orchestral excerpts:  opening oboe cadenza from Saint-SaĆ«ns' Samson and Dalila Danse Bacchanale, Op. 47 and 1st oboe excerpts from Copland's Saturday Night Waltz from "Rodeo" 

Clarinet
Chromatic scale from low E to high G (four ledger lines above staff)
Required solo:  :  Franz Krommer Concerto in E-flat Major for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 36 mvmt. I: mm. 51-132; mvmt. II: mm. 12 to 33.
Clarinet orchestral excerpts:  1st clarinet excerpts from Mussorgsky's Night on the Bare Mountain

Bassoon:
Three octave chromatic scale from low B-flat
Required solo:  Julius Weissenborn Fifty Bassoon Studies, Op. 8, Vol. II # 21: beginning to m. 27; #38: no repeats or D.C.
Bassoon orchestral excerpts:  1st and 2nd bassoon excerpts from Bizet's Carmen Suite #1, No. 4 Les dragons d'Alcala


BRASS:

All brass should be prepared to play all major scales, 1-3 octaves, depending on their personal abilities and a full range chromatic scale, depending on their personal range abilities (from lowest comfortable note to highest comfortable note).  Prepare a solo, the required excerpts below.  Sight reading will be asked at the audition.

Horn:
Solo: Franz Strauss Concerto, Opus 8, 1st mvt.

All instruments: Sight reading.

Violin:
3 octave scales: G, A, B flat, D and F majors. G, A and D melodic minors.  Scales will be rated on intonation, tone quality and tempo. A minimum of 4 notes per bow is required.
A solo of your choice with a difficulty rating of at least the Bach A minor or Mozart G major Concertos.
Violin Excerpts: Beethoven 5 and Tchaikovsky

Viola:
3 octave scales: C,D,E, Eb, F, G, A, and their relative melodic minor; Hoffmeister Viola concerto or any movement from the Bach cello suite for Viola, or piece of  equivalent technical proficiency.
Viola Excerpts- Beethoven 5 excerpts: mvmt. 2 m. 1-75 and mvmt. 3 m. 146-213

Cello:
3 octave scales: C, D, Eb, F, G, C melodic minor, D melodic minor; A solo piece of your choice, displaying your highest level of ability (concerto exposition or Bach suite, movement suggested, but not required.)
