2008 JYO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

ALL INSTRUMENTS:
Sight reading; play a solo of your choice showing your abilities and range. Please bring a copy of your solo for the judges.

IN ADDITION:

Winds and Brass:
Major scales of one or two octaves from the following: C, Bb, F, Eb, G, D, A, and a chromatic scale.

Violin:
Major scales, 2 octaves required, 3 preferable: G, A, Bb, D.

Viola:
Major scales, 2 octaves: C, D, Eb, G.

Cello:
Scales, 3 octaves: C and D Major; 2 octaves: Eb Major and d melodic minor.

Bass:
Major scales, 2 octaves: E, F, G.

Percussion:
All percussion audition candidates must pick a solo of your choice on EITHER a mallet keyboard instrument, snare drum or timpani, showing your best abilities. Sight reading will also be given on that particular instrument.

In addition, each person is REQUIRED to perform on all of the following:

Snare Drum:
Rudimental Roll, Orchestral Roll, Flams, Paradiddles.

Mallet Instruments:
2 Octave Major Scales & Arpeggios: C, F, Bb, Eb, G, & D. Plus, Chromatic Scale, 2 Octaves.

Timpani:
Long Roll, ppp to fff. Interval tuning to 4ths, 5ths and 3rds.

Harp:
All major scales and arpeggios.

2008 CSYO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

WOODWINDS:

All major scales and arpeggios, minimum of two octaves. Required solo – no substitutions accepted; sight-reading. If you play and have access to a piccolo, English horn or bass clarinet you must also prepare a short selection of your choice for your audition.

Flute:
Three octave chromatic scale from low C.
J.S. Bach Sonata in E Major (mvmts. I & II)

Oboe:
Chromatic scale low C to high Eb (three ledger lines above staff).
Benedetto Marcello Concerto in C Minor for Oboe and Piano (mvmts. II & III)

Clarinet:
Chromatic scale low E to high G (four ledger lines above staff).
Krommer Concerto in Eb Major (mvmts. I & II)

Bassoon:
Three octave chromatic scale from low Bb.
Julius Weissenborn Fifty Bassoon Studies, Op. 8, Vol. II (#21 & #38)

BRASS:

All instruments - all major scales, 2 octaves. Required solo -- no substitutions accepted; listed excerpt(s); sight reading.

Horn:
Chromatic scale low C to high Bb; Morceau de Concert, mvt. 1 by Camille Saint-Saens
Excerpt: Nocturne from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night's Dream from Max Pottag “French Horn Passages” vol. I (pub. Belwin Mills)

Trumpet:
Chromatic scale low F# to high C; Sonata for Trumpet, mvt. 1 by Kent Kennan

Trombone:
Chromatic scale low E to high Bb; Concerto for Trombone, mvt. I by Rimsky Korsakov

Tuba:
Chromatic scale low F to high Bb; Sonata for tuba, mvt. I by Beversdorf
Excerpt: Berlioz Hungarian March, Wagner Ride of the Valkyrie

STRINGS:

All instruments: Sight reading.

Violin:
3 octave scales: G, A, Bb, D, and g melodic minor; Mozart Concert No. 3 (1st mvmt.) or Bach Concerto No. 1 in a minor or a piece of equivalent difficulty.

Viola:
3 octave scales: C, D, Eb; Hoffmeister Concerto (1st or 3rd mvmt.) or Telemann Concerto (2nd or 4th mvmt.) or any one movement from J.S. Bach Cello Suites for viola or a piece of equivalent difficulty.

Cello:
3 octave scales: C,F,Bb,Eb,G,D,A; one movement of any Bach Suite or a Sonata or Concerto movement or piece that demonstrates a variety of slow and fast playing.

Bass:
2 octaves C major (into thumb position) and g harmonic minor. Solo choices (pick one):
Marcello - Sonata #2 in e minor/2nd movement
Vivaldi - Sonata #5 in e minor / 2nd movement
Simandl - Etude #17 from 30 Etudes

Harp:
All major scales and arpeggios; Tchaikovsky "Waltz of the Flowers" cadenza from Nutcracker and solo work of your choice.

PERCUSSION:

All percussion audition candidates must play the following solo on EITHER a mallet keyboard instrument, snare drum or timpani, (from "Audition Etudes" by Garwood Whaley):

Snare Drum: #9, page
Mallet Keyboard (xylophone): #10, page 23
Timpani: #14, p.18

(Sight reading will also be given on your 'solo' instrument.)

In addition, each person is REQUIRED to perform on all of the following:

PIANO:

Only open to candidates who are also auditioning on other orchestral instruments (preferably percussion or strings). Choose a solo piece demonstrating your range and ability; sight reading.
